Our History

Our Corporate History

1859

Henry Hyde founded the Equitable Life Assurance Society.

1917–1918

Equitable waived the industry prohibition against paying death benefits to men in battle during World War I.

1930s

During the Great Depression, Equitable paid 99% of death claims within 24 hours.

1941–1945

During World War II the company again waived restrictions on battle death benefits.

1967

Karr Barth was founded as the Philadelphia branch by George Karr and Bob Barth.

1992

AXA made its initial investment in Equitable.

2001

AXA Equitable pledged over $10 million for 9/11 disaster relief.

2003

The AXA Achievement Scholarship launched, awarding over $1M annually to students.

2008

Karr Barth began supporting the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Cancer Center.

2010

AXA Equitable launched Structured Capital Strategies, the first buffered annuity.

2016

Karr Barth celebrated its 50th anniversary.

2019

The firm moved to its new office at 1 Belmont Ave in Bala Cynwyd.

2020

AXA Equitable officially changed its name to Equitable.
